Shadow had a lot of blood inside and her blood pressure dropped, so the vet decided to perform a life-saving oophorectomy (removal of the reproductive organs).
10 vets and nurses worked together to get 18 other puppies out of Shadow, bringing her total litter to a whopping 21 puppies (18 of which lived omission)
While Shadow slowly recovered from surgery, ICU nurses spent the day caring for the 18 puppies, taking turns and taking turns feeding from their mothers.
Currently Shadow is doing well and is now resting at home with his new born children.
While Shadow has broken the record for the largest litter in Australia, she is one of only four dogs who have failed to beat the world record, held by a dog named Neapolitan Mastiff, who gave birth to 24 puppies. puppies in 2004.
